Art and Writing Contest: MLK’s Dream
As part of our MLK 101 Series, the Howell Carnegie Library, in partnership with the Livingston Diversity Council and Huron-Clinton Metroparks, is having an Art and Writing Contest for area youth.
- Create a written or artistic work in response to the prompt: MLK’s Dream.
- Open to students in grades 3-12 who reside within the Howell Public Schools District.
- There are 3 age groups: Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8 & Grades 9-12
- Students must submit their creations to the Howell Carnegie Library, 314 W. Grand River Ave., Howell, MI, during regular business hours, between 9 am December 12, 2022, and 7 pm on January 3, 2023.
- A three-person panel will judge the works based on visual appearance, content, and quality.
- The winners, one per age group, will be notified on January 9, 2023. Winners will receive a $100 Visa gift card.
- Winners will read or share their creations at the reception hosted by the Howell Carnegie Library as part of our MLK 101 Series immediately before the original one-man show: King Crusader and the Missing Michael, January 16, 2023, at 5:30 pm.
- The library will display all entries in the Youth Department between January 9 and February 28, 2023.
- Immediate family members of library staff and board are ineligible for prizes.

Submission Requirements:
- Name, phone, email, grade.
- It must be either a written entry (poem, essay, etc.) or an artistic entry (painting, drawing, photograph, sculpture, etc.). Submissions are not limited to these examples but must be a physical creation appropriate for display.
- Written submissions must be under 3 minutes long (when read) and no larger than 11”x17”.
- Artistic submissions must be no larger than 36.5” linear inches (length + width + height).
- Works will be on display in the library's Youth Department and should be appropriate for viewing by all ages.
