The History of Howell's Notable Black Citizens with Lindsay Root Online
Let local historian and Howell native Lindsay Root take you on an exciting historical journey of Howell through the treasures he’s discovered in Howell’s Black History story. Learn the stories of Black citizens' contributions to the Howell community: Abraham Losford and Benjamin Losford, and their barbering story; and George Jewett, Howell’s first football coach.
Lindsay Root was born and raised in Howell. He attended Central Michigan University for TV & Film and promptly went west for work at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, ultimately staying 18 years in Hollywood working a variety freelance film production work. The majority of Lindsay’s work included feature films, and later documentary-style programs, mostly working as editor or camerawork. In 1989 travel and adventure sent Lindsay on a Around the World trek that lasted a whole year and profoundly influenced his life--and he can’t wait to do it again. Returning to Howell to be a family caregiver in the early 2000s, Lindsay started producing video stories of local Livingston County appeal. He quickly was immersed at the Howell Opera House, discovering his grandparents met there in 1908 on a blind date. This personal family connection started a constant drive for research on the Howell Opera House, mining its history for other Howell stories. Currently Lindsay Root works as a freelance content producer in the Michigan region.
