Learning From Our Past to Create a Better Future with the Livingston Diversity Council

Learning From Our Past to Create a Better Future with the Livingston Diversity Council Online

The Livingston Diversity Council (LDC) was established as a non-profit organization in 1987 by a group of concerned community members in response to crimes of hate and racism in Livingston County. Our County’s past and identity are inextricably linked with the KKK, Robert (Bob) Miles, white supremacy rallies, and cross burnings.

While some would say that since Miles' death in 1992, white supremacy died with him along with racism - that we are no longer "that" community – and there is no active Klan or other identified hate group in Livingston, the LDC is still very active in our community because these issues of racism, heterosexism, ableism, and other types of oppression still exist here, as in many other communities.

Over the past three years, the LDC has grown not only in numbers, but in capacity and expertise to address the power and oppression that exist in our policies, our practices, and our communication with each other. Learn about the Council’s current goals, programs, and initiatives of the LDC and how the community can support these efforts.

Nicole Matthews-Creech (pronouns: she, her) is the President of the Livingston Diversity Council’s Board of Directors, serving in this volunteer position since 2011. She is a white cisgender female. Ms. Matthews-Creech worked at LACASA for over 20 years, focusing on education and organizational change within our various Livingston County systems and institutions. A graduate of Brighton High School, she has a Master’s in Family Life Education from Western Michigan University.
